Syed Bibi and Forced Prostitution

Woman arrested accused of persuading her daughter in law into prostitution along with her pimp group in Farah province. On October 21, 2019, Sayed Bibi 45 years old with four other crime partners detained at her property where they met an undercover detective who they thought was a customer. Once the initial investigation proceeded, their cases were handed over to the prosecution office for further inquiries. On December 3, 2019, the primary court sentenced the four suspects to 2 years and two months of detainment based on paragraph 1, article 644 of the Afghanistan Penal Code. Sayed Bibi was charged with a felony of involuntary sexual servitude and promoting misdemeanor prostitution to two years of imprisonment based on article 651 of the Afghanistan Penal Code. Prostitution in Afghanistan is illegal, with punishments ranging from 2 to 15 years imprisonment. The country is deeply religious and conservative, where sex outside marriage is forbidden and against the law.
